Sarcoma is rare. Treatment centers are few. Distance shouldn’t decide who gets to fight.

We pay for flights, hotels, and ground transport so sarcoma patients can get to specialist centers.

Who We Help

Sarcoma patients need specialist centers. Most live hundreds of miles from one.

Over 40% of sarcoma pathology results change when a specialist reviews them. Up to 53% of patients show up at a sarcoma center after a surgeon who didn’t specialize in sarcoma already operated. Patients treated at specialist sarcoma centers have a 32% lower risk of death and are 2.7x more likely to get clean surgical margins. But most patients don’t live near one.

That means leaving home and paying for flights, hotels, and ground transportation that insurance won’t cover. We pay those costs directly so patients can reach the specialists they need for initial diagnosis, consultation, or treatment.

Eligibility Snapshot

Do you qualify for a travel grant?

Three criteria. If you meet them, apply. It takes about 15 minutes.

  1. 01Sarcoma Diagnosis

You have a pathology-confirmed sarcoma diagnosis, any subtype, any age. Currently available to US patients.

  2. 02Need Access to Specialist Care

You need to travel to reach a specialist sarcoma center for initial diagnosis, consultation, or treatment. We prioritize patients 100+ miles from a major sarcoma center, but exceptions apply.

  3. 03Travel Is a Strain

The cost of getting to treatment is a financial burden: distance, lost work time, limited savings, or insurance gaps.

Frequently Asked

Common questions, answered.

If you don’t see your question here, reach out via our contact page. We respond within one business day.

Who qualifies for a Beat the Odds travel grant?
Any person diagnosed with sarcoma (bone or soft tissue, including GIST and rare subtypes) who needs to travel to reach a specialist sarcoma center for initial diagnosis, consultation, surgery, or treatment. We help patients access specialist care they don't currently have -- not ongoing travel for patients already established at a specialist center. We prioritize patients 100+ miles from a major sarcoma center, but exceptions apply. There is no age restriction -- pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients are all eligible. A parent or guardian may apply on behalf of a minor. Grants are currently available to patients residing in the United States.
What travel expenses does the grant cover?
We cover airfare (economy class), hotel accommodations near the treatment center (for the patient and one companion), ground transportation (rideshare, taxi, bus, train, rental car), and gas reimbursement for personal vehicle travel. All payments go directly to service providers. We do not cover medical treatment costs, medications, meals, rent, lost wages, or cash assistance of any kind.
How long does the review process take?
Our target turnaround is 48 to 72 hours from application to decision. Every application is reviewed by our full three-member board. In urgent cases where treatment is imminent, contact us directly and we will expedite. Incomplete applications may require follow-up, which pauses the clock until we hear back from you.
How do I apply? What do I need to submit?
Click "Apply for a Grant" on this page or navigate to the Apply section. You will need: (1) a letter or documentation confirming your sarcoma diagnosis, (2) a referral or appointment confirmation showing the specialist center and travel distance, and (3) a brief statement of financial need. No physician co-signature is required to initiate an application.
Is this a loan? Do I have to pay it back?
No. This is a charitable grant, a gift with no repayment obligation. Beat the Odds Sarcoma Fund is structured as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and grants are funded by charitable donations. The only thing we ask is that recipients let us know how the trip went, so we can share anonymized outcomes with donors.
